Greenbelt Homes Woodlands Committee
Meeting time and location: 10:20 a.m., Centerville Hall Parking Lot
The Greenbelt Homes Inc. (GHI) Woodlands Committee is a volunteer-driven group in Old Greenbelt, Maryland. It manages and protects roughly 93 to 100 acres of community forest and common-area green spaces. The group promotes local urban forestry, maintains nature trails, and organizes community work events. Data Justice Scholars will be assisting with invasive plant removal in the area.
Items to wear/bring:
- Your Scholars t-shirt
- Long pants (it is tick season!)
- Full, reusable water bottle
- Wear closed-toed shoes (boots are preferred over sneakers)
- Bug spray
Public Data Rescue Service Project
Meeting time and location: 10:45 a.m., Entrance to the Yahentamitsi Dining Hall ("The Y")
Data Justice Scholars will walk from the Yahentamitsi Dining Hall together to room 1100 in the Cambridge Community Center. Here they will participate in a national volunteer initiative founded by data librarians, archivists, and technologists to safeguard at-risk U.S. government public data.
Items to wear/bring:
- Your Scholars t-shirt, comfortable clothes
- Laptop and laptop charger
- Boxed lunch (pickup from the Y)
- Full, reusable water bottle
Optional but recommended: Keyboard, mouse
Community Learning Garden with the Campus Arboretum
Meeting time and location: 8:50 a.m., Entrance to the Yahentamitsi Dining Hall ("The Y")
The Community Learning Garden (CLG) at the University of Maryland (UMD) is a student-run space, managed jointly by a student club and advisors from the Institute of Applied Agriculture and the UMD Arboretum & Botanical Garden. The CLG’s mission is to put into practice lessons about the importance of environmental stewardship, agricultural sustainability, physical activity, and balanced diets. Data Justice Scholars will be assisting with garden maintenance.
