Deep Roots Farm

Meeting time and location: 8:30 a.m., Cambridge Hall, quad side

Deep Roots Farm is a regenerative women-owned and -operated farm located in Brandywine and Upper Marlboro, Maryland. The farm grows vegetables, herbs, fruit and flowers, and raises chickens on 50 acres for the community. The farm takes a holistic approach to farming that encourages continuous innovation and improvement of environmental, social and economic measures. STS's Service Day will involve helping Deep Roots Farm clear land for planting crops in the spring.

Koiner Farm

Meeting time and location: 8:30 a.m., Cambridge Hall, quad side

Koiner Farm, located in Montgomery County, Maryland, is a pioneering urban agricultural initiative with a mission to protect and sustain urban farms. Its goal is to inspire the next generation of sustainable food innovators, including future farmers and food enthusiasts. The vision for Koiner Farm is a thriving network of community-led farms across urban neighborhoods, establishing closed-loop micro-food systems that foster connections among residents, their food, and the land. STS's Service Day will involve helping Koiner Farm clear land for planting crops.

Dreaming Out Loud

Meeting time and location: 8:30 a.m., Cambridge Hall, quad side

Dreaming Out Loud is a DC-based urban community food system through cooperative social enterprise. Its goal is to increase access to healthy food, improve community health, and cooperatives from low-income communities, and create opportunities for at-risk residents to earn sustainable, family-supporting wages and build wealth. Their belief is that all communities deserve equal access to fresh healthy food choices. They are dedicated to creating an integrated pipeline to local economic opportunity, and local community wealth-building for marginalized communities, using the food system as a catalyst for change. STS students will learn how the local farm empowers marginalized communities through local food system.

Eco City Farms

Meeting time and location: 8:30 a.m., Cambridge Hall, quad side

Eco City Farms is a local educational, nonprofit urban farm that resides in the Riverdale community near College Park. It seeks “to enhance food security, safety and access; to improve nutrition and health; to preserve cultural and ecological diversity; and to accelerate the transition to an economy based on preservation, recycling and restoration.” STS students will help Eco City Farm staff with day-to-day operations of the farm, which could include tasks such as harvesting, transporting food to local markets, maintenance of farm infrastructure and general upkeep.
