Joe's Movement Emporium
Meeting time and location: 8:15 a.m., in front of Bel Air Hall
Joe's Movement Emporium is based in Mount Rainier, Maryland, in the Gateway Arts District of Prince George's County. Joe’s serves more than 70,000 visitors annually. The cultural arts hub provides programming and productions in education, the performing arts and work readiness.
Arts Scholars will participate in a variety of projects under the guidance of the Joe’s Movement Emporium staff. These projects will likely involve helping staff reset their studio and rehearsal spaces for the upcoming school year, which will include the cleaning of spaces and the reorganization of supplies and equipment. Projects may also include light gardening and landscaping around the exterior of the facility. While at the site, students will also have the opportunity to learn about the wide variety of arts programs, events and educational opportunities Joe's offers to all ages of local communities throughout the year.
Additional Items to bring:
- Wear lightweight, comfortable clothing you don't mind getting dirty (long pants are recommended)
- Wear closed-toed shoes (no flip-flops or sandals)
- Face masks required at this site (we'll have additional masks on hand if needed)
- Sunglasses, sunblock and a hat for added sun protection
- A refillable water bottle
Creative Suitland
Meeting time and location: 8:15 a.m., in front of Bel Air Hall
Creative Suitland Arts Center, a project of Joe’s Movement Emporium, seeks to enhance the local creative industry through job creation, artist opportunity, audience development, creative placemaking and art education. Creative Suitland is an arts-based community development strategy to include residents and businesses in defining the cultural and creative spirit of greater Suitland area, which encompasses the central Prince George’s County communities of Suitland, Coral Hills, Silver Hill, Forestville, Capitol Heights, District Heights, Camp Springs, Hillcrest Heights, Marlow Heights and Temple Hills.
Creative Suitland's Empty Spaces Creative Places initiative supports several on-site projects, including an existing parking lot mural and other installations. Arts Scholars will assist with some maintenance of the art displays and the possibility of assisting staff with the completion of a new mural installation. While at the site, students will have the opportunity to learn about the wide variety of arts programs, events and educational opportunities provided to the community from on-site staff.

Brookside Gardens
Meeting time and location: 8:15 a.m., in front of Bel Air Hall
Brookside Gardens is Montgomery County’s incomparable, award-winning 50-acre public display garden within Wheaton Regional Park. Included in the gardens are several distinct areas: Aquatic Garden, Azalea Garden, Butterfly Garden, Children’s Garden, Rose Garden, Japanese Style Garden, Trial Garden, Rain Garden, and the Woodland Walk. The Formal Gardens areas include a Perennial Garden, Yew Garden, the Maple Terrace, and Fragrance Garden. Brookside Gardens also features two conservatories for year-round enjoyment.
Additional items to bring:
- Closed-toed shoes or boots
- Long pants that cover the ankles
- Long sleeves optional (dress in layers if desired)
- Other items include hats, bug spray, sunscreen and a reusable water bottle or added sun protection
