Leveling the Playing Field
Meeting time and location: 8:30 a.m., 1111 Cambridge Community Center
Leveling the Playing Field gives underprivileged children the opportunity to enjoy the pleasures of athletic involvement. Studies show that students who participate in athletics have higher grade point averages, attendance rates, standardized test scores, educational aspirations and healthier habits.
At Leveling the Playing Field, students will work to help sort and inventory donations of athletic equipment in the warehouse and help prepare sports equipment to be distributed across the Washington, D.C. area.

Interfaith Works Clothing Center
Meeting time and location: 8:30 a.m., 1111 Cambridge Community Center
The Interfaith Clothing Center in Rockville provides low-income families with clothing and home goods free of charge, allowing them to use more of their resources on food, rent, utilities, medicine, and other basic needs. Students will assist with distributing food to clients with the Food Hub, as well as cleaning up school supplies and sorting clothing.
Additional items to bring:
- Make sure to wear comfortable clothing, including closed-toe shoes
- Refillable water bottle
Campus Arboretum
Meeting time and location: 8:15 a.m., 1205 Cambridge Community Center
The University of Maryland (UMD) Arboretum and Botanical Garden boasts more than 8,000 trees and garden plantings. This diverse landscaping supports the UMD Arboretum and Botanical Garden’s mission of promoting the preservation and conservation of our natural environment, supporting campus research, and enhancing place-making and aesthetics on campus.
In collaboration with the UMD Arboretum and Botanical Garden staff, Media Scholars will contribute to a campus beautification project in various areas of campus. Students will receive information about ways to get involved with the Campus Arboretum beyond Service Day.

- Wear lightweight, comfortable clothing you don't mind getting dirty (long pants are recommended)
- Wear closed-toed shoes (no flip-flops or sandals)
- Sunglasses, sunblock and a hat for added sun protection
- A refillable water bottle
Shepherd's Table
Meeting time and location: 10:00 a.m., 1205 Cambridge Community Center
Shepherd’s Table addresses food insecurity and homelessness through an array of programs designed to both meet immediate needs and provide sustained social support. Our mission is to improve quality of life, create a pathway towards self-sufficiency, and inspire hope for the most vulnerable. As an organization, we’re defined by four key values: community, acceptance, reliability, and teamwork.
