Kenilworth Park and Aquatic Gardens

Meeting time and location: 8:30 a.m., north lawn of Centreville Hall

Kenilworth Park and Aquatic Gardens makes up some 700 acres in northeast Washington, D.C. near the Maryland boundary along the tidal Anacostia River and includes the Gardens and Kenilworth Marsh. Begun in the 1880s and incorporated into the National Park system in 1938, the gardens are the only National Park Service site devoted to the propagation and display of aquatic plants.

Bladensburg Waterfront Park

Meeting time and location: 9 a.m., outside of Chestertown Hall (Cambridge Community quad side)

Bladensburg Waterfront Park is located on the Anacostia River, and offers the community a place to gather, boat, fish, bike, play and learn more about the history of the river. Students will help with beautification projects around the park, including possibly picking up trash, painting and more.

Leveling the Playing Field

Meeting time and location: 9:30 a.m., 1111 Cambridge Community Center

Leveling the Playing Field gives underprivileged children the opportunity to enjoy the pleasures of athletic involvement. Studies show that students who participate in athletics have higher grade point averages, attendance rates, standardized test scores, educational aspirations and healthier habits.

Life Sciences Service Day

David C. Driskell Community Park

Meeting time and location: 9 a.m., LaPlata Beach

Located just south of College Park, Hyattsville is a city focused on community development and a vibrant arts scene. David C. Driskell Community Park, named after the late University of Maryland professor and successful artist, has been a central community space in the city for nearly 100 years. The park hosts local sports teams on many of its fields and has accessible pathways leading to the Anacostia River Northwest Branch Trail.

Solutions in Hometown Connections

Meeting time and location: 8:30 a.m., 1100 Cambridge Community Center

This year, JLT will be partnering with Solutions in Hometown Connections to serve refugee families in the DC–Maryland–Virginia region, at three different sites. Solutions in Hometown Connections (SHC) provides mentoring and community programs to refugee and immigrant families. Students will assist SHC distributing school uniforms and helping our new neighbors sign up for resources during their annual Back to School Drive.

Upper Marlboro Research and Education Center 

Meeting time and location: 8.00 a.m., in front of Chestertown Hall

This 202-acre area known as the Upper Marlboro facility is located in Prince George's County. This facility focuses on the development of alternative crops to replace the declining tobacco crop in Maryland. We will work with researchers on site

RFK Meadows

Meeting time and location: 8:30 a.m., 1205 Cambridge Community Center

The National Park Service Invasive Plant Management Team is hosting non-native invasive plant removal events at RFK Meadows to help rescue green spaces from non-native invasive species through the hands-on removal of especially harmful trees, vines, and flowering plants. Participants will learn how to identify and control several non-native invasive plants threatening our natural communities.
