Four Scholars alumni are among the handful of graduating seniors recognized this month with some of the University of Maryland’s most prestigious awards.
Gabriela Winter, an alum of the Public Leadership Scholars program, received the Wilson H. Elkins Citizenship Awards, presented each year to one of the top students in the graduating class who has displayed outstanding involvement and leadership in campus activities.
She and two other Scholars alums were named to the Maryland Medallion Society, which comprises 20 of the brightest student leaders at the university. The other two alums were:
- Calvin Burns, Environment, Technology and Economy
- Abhirami Thaivalappil, Global Public Health
In addition, Josiah Bedford, an alum of the Science, Technology and Society Scholars program, received the John B. Slaughter Outstanding Senior Award. The award is presented to a senior “of the African Diaspora who has been active on the campus, has been an advocate for the needs of students, and has an outstanding academic career,” according to the University Awards website.
Other Recognitions
Finally, four current Scholars students were named recipients of Omicron Delta Kappa Awards, including two named Sophomore Leaders of the Year:
- Sara L. Blau, International Studies
- Jessica P. Ye, International Studies
And two named Top 10 Freshmen of the Year:
- Alexis Faucette, Public Leadership
- Nicholas Marks, Public Leadership
