Graduate Assistant, Arts

Andréa A. César is a Graduate Assistant with the College Arts Scholars Program and a Ph.D. student in American Studies in the College of Arts and Humanities at the University of Maryland. She earned a Bachelor of Science from the State University of New York at New Paltz in 2016, an M.A. in Performance Studies from New York University in 2016, and an M.A. in Dance Education from Hunter College in 2019.

A multidisciplinary scholar, artist, and educator, Andréa's work bridges Black feminist thought, queer Caribbean studies, performance, and culturally responsive pedagogy. With more than a decade of experience in K–12 education, higher education, arts leadership, and community-based programming, she has designed curricula and led educational initiatives centered on equity, radical storytelling, and collective liberation.

Her research explores Black and Caribbean feminist pedagogies, queer studies, and radical storytelling as practices of self-preservation, resistance, and community building. Drawing on Black feminist epistemologies, oral traditions, performance, and decolonial methodologies, her scholarship examines the lives, cultural representation, and embodied experiences of queer Caribbean women, particularly in Haiti and Cuba. Through both her academic and creative work, Andréa is committed to expanding conversations around identity, memory, performance, and social justice.
