Each Spring, the Office of Undergraduate Studies hosts a year-end celebration and reception to honor the accomplishments of its faculty and staff.
One of the highlights of the ceremony is the presentation of the Donna B. Hamilton Teaching Awards. The Donna B. Hamilton General Education Teaching Award recognizes extraordinary teaching in a General Education course across the whole university based on undergraduate student nominations. The Office of Undergraduate Studies recognizes two faculty members for excellence in teaching each year: one faculty member teaching in an Undergraduate Studies Program, and one faculty member teaching in a General Education Program.
This year's Award for Excellence in Undergraduate Teaching in a General Education Course went to Timothy Reedy, lecturer in both the Science, Technology and Society Scholars program and in Engineering. It marked the second consecutive year a faculty member from College Park Scholars received one of the teaching recognitions and the third time since 2022.
His student nominators raved about Reedy's ability to connect through his enthusiasm and open-mindedness.
Student Hailey Chawla wrote: “Professor Reedy is an exceptional role model because he demonstrates intellectual curiosity, open-mindedness, and a commitment to ethical decision-making. He encourages us to challenge ideas, ask tough questions, and develop our own ethical viewpoints. His mentorship has personally inspired me to take on leadership roles and guide other students in the same way he guided me.”
Student Elisabeth Durso wrote: “Professor Reedy was a good mentor to my class through his approachability, willingness to offer feedback, and passion for the class content. His enthusiasm and affability went a long way to creating a positive learning atmosphere and made learning the content enjoyable. By creating space for students to shape our own learning experiences, Professor Reedy helped us to better understand and appreciate the course’s challenging material.”
Other members of the College Park Scholars community were recognized for their years of service at the University of Maryland:
- Ben Beltran, 5 Years
- Carolyn Seward, 45 Years
