STS students New York City 2009
ADMISSION AND REQUIREMENTS

Welcome to STS!

Students in the STS Program are selected from among applicants who list STS as their first preference among the College Park Scholars family of programs. We seek an entering class of about 75 students. In recent years, about 2/3 of the program's students have earned a variety of engineering and computer science degrees, and 1/3 have earned degrees in a wide range of disciplines, including the humanities and biological sciences.

Prospective students may want to learn about what the freshmen did in colloquium in the Spring 2009 semester.

The Scholars STS program emphasizes the importance of science and technology to society. We also examine the opposite relationship: the ways that social characteristics shape the investigation of science and the development of technology. Your essay enables us to match your interests with the program.

Prospective Students will be interested in the program for the close look it gives to the interactions among science, technology and society. Students typically have very good aptitude in writing, math and science. STS assignments emphasize writing and speaking skills, work in small groups, and improving drafts prior to final assignments.

New students enroll in a 1-credit Colloquium in the Fall and Spring semesters. The First Year Advising Sheet details additional opportunities and requirements.

Sophomores enroll in a 1-credit Practicum and a 3-credit Capstone course in the Fall or Spring semesters. The 2nd Year Advising Sheet details additional opportunities and requirements. Sophomores have a lot of freedom to choose their Practicum; we urge students to enroll in CPSP 239T, based on a summer job after freshman year.

To earn the Scholars Citation, a student's overall GPA must be a 3.0 at the end of sophomore year.

Students who enjoy the STS Program and have room in their schedule may consider joining the University Certificate Program in Science, Technology and Society. This may take some planning in your sophomore year, so please look into this early.
