Maryland Senate President Miller Addresses Advocates for Children Seminar

April 24, 2008

Senate President Mike Miller with Advocates for Children

College Park, Md.  – Thomas V. “Mike” Miller, President of the State of Maryland’s Senate, addressed sophomores enrolled in the Advocates for Children’s Advocacy in Action seminar, on April 24.  Miller was introduced by William E. “Brit” Kirwan, Chancellor of the University System of Maryland, and member of the College Park Scholars Founders Circle.

The Senator’s comments addressed leadership and advocacy.  On leadership, Miller stressed determination, but it must be paired with responsibility. He also observed that confidence breeds enthusiasm.  On advocacy, Miller encouraged electoral engagement by registering to vote – and voting.  He also promoted political engagement, through writing to -- and talking with -- elected officials.

Above all, Sen. Miller stressed that to be an effective leader or advocate, you have to be an engaged learner. “Know your issue, inside and out.” As an avid reader, Miller stressed the study of history of all ages. Contemporary history is equally important. “Study how others struggle with similar issues.” He concluded his comments by stressing the importance of asking others for their support of your ideas and leadership.  “You can’t do it alone.  And don’t forget to thank people who participate, regardless of which side of the issue they are on.”

Sen. Miller holds a bachelor's degree in business administration from the University of Maryland College Park, and graduated from the University of Maryland’s Law School with LL.B. and J.D. degrees. He has been a member of the Maryland and Prince George’s Bar since 1967, with a private practice in Prince George’s and Calvert Counties.  Miller is the longest serving Senate President in the history of Maryland’s legislature.
